INTO THE CUBICLE FOREST
The Brooks journal project
By Clifford Brooks

In August of 1999, one technical writer disappeared in the suburbs near San Jose, California while researching an article.

A day later his Windows CE-based device was found…

Dear Cassiopeia:
Being Friday the 13th, today may not be the best choice for starting a new endeavor. But here I am writing my first journal entry. You, my beautiful Cassiopeia E-100, seem like the perfect vehicle for me to enter my thoughts on the fly. After all, you're always at my side; your security features are better than the tiny key in my underwear drawer; and, with the current state of Windows CE software, keeping you up to date is not only easy, but fun!

So I got into work this morning, and the first thing I did was to check my email. Did I get a surprise or what? I NEVER thought I'd hear from HER again.

Dear Cassiopeia:
I've got a couple of choices when it comes to securing my data. You know, it really would be painful if somebody got hold of you and read these entries. They're my personal record of my life and of the thoughts and ideas that ramble through my brain on a daily basis. So let's see...how do I keep you safe, without hampering my day-to-day use of you?

Well, there is your security feature. That ought to work. Windows CE allows me to password-protect you, as shown in Figure A.

Here's the Windows CE Password Protection Screen. Roll over picture for a larger image.

Let's see, how do I do that again? Oh yeah, here it is. All I have to do is select Settings->Password, from the Start menu and you allow me to enter a password. Let's see, I've got to come up with something easy to remember. An acronym:

She'll
Be
Coming
Around
The
Mountain
When
She
Comes

SBCATMWSC. That'll work.

I meet HER for coffee…tomorrow...at 6:30. She'll be wearing a Garfield T-shirt and jeans. Hmmm....

5:35 PM 8/14/99
Dear Cassiopeia:
Returned a cordless phone to Fry's Electronics because it had an irritating buzzing noise. That's what I get for buying a refurbished unit. Still, $28 was a good deal. I think. Anyway, I exchanged it for a Cross Digital Writer Duo. On one end it's a Cross Pen, the other end is a stylus. The cap covers the end you're not using. Man, does it work well! It makes writing on the screen of my Windows CE-based device a joy...and the comfortable grip has increased the letter recognition of the Calligrapher Handwriting Recognition engine.

Gotta meet her at 6:30. Brooks Books and Cafe on El Camino. Nice place...I hope she's nice too.

9:25 PM 8/14/99
Dear Cassiopeia:
The first date went better than I'd hoped. Man, is she ever beautiful...and that perfume she was wearing was too much! I can still smell it. Anyway, she gave me her phone number! It was after we'd each had a cup of coffee, and we were talking about all the fattening pastries behind the counter, when she just blurted it out, like she was selecting cheesecake or something!
